Our Setting
We recognise that there are multiple reasons why families choose to explore outdoor learning or flexi-school.
Our offer is one whose first accountability is to preserve the magic of childhood. We want to give children rich opportunities to play a part in their own days, we want them to feel supported by adults, not controlled by them.
You and Your Family
We understand that as a parent you want the very best for your child and it is our passionate belief that we can help you provide this for your home-educating family. At Kingwood, we base our approach around the concept of Koselig and Adventure that recognise the importance of the ‘warmth’ of time spent together as well as giving children a growing autonomy to make choices and know what to do with them.

Your family will become part of Kingwood and share in the adventure and joy of childhood. We believe in creating authentic partnerships that enable all to play their role in a child’s early life and we want to collaborate with our families so that children are at the centre of their own adventure.

The Day
At Kingwood, our Outdoor Learning programme is very much shaped around a blend of choice, autonomy, connections to the Natural World, exploration, invention, skills sharing, and what we refer to as ‘The Joy of Being Me and the Joy of Being You’.
This refers to mutual respect and value between the children and our teaching team.
This blend of choice shapes the rhythm that gives children and adults a sense of how each day will unfold, Each day is split into morning and afternoon sessions that will look like this:

Koselig
Koselig moments are those in which all children and adults come together to be welcomed and connected with and to outline the possibilities that lie ahead – they are a little like a Base Camp for the phases of Adventure!
We believe that Koselig moments are important parts of each session, creating a sense of belonging and solidarity with one another. The moments of Koselig will typically last around between 10-15 minutes each.
Play Parameters
Kingwood’s pedagogy centres around the concept of children’s autonomy.
We do however believe that choice contains within it a sense of personal responsibility as we want children and adults to see that they are responsible for what they do with the choices they are given.
To do this, we have a simple set of Play Parameters that we use to guide us to Make The Right Choice. These parameters are for adults and children alike and are:

As a parent, if you have any doubt that your child will be able to adhere to the Play Parameters then we may not be the setting for you. We cannot offer 1:1 support for your child, so they will need to have a basic understanding of the importance of our parameters. We have these so that all children can safely immerse in their day and adventure together in the spirit of unity.
